WOODEN WICK TUTORIAL

“I’m having trouble keeping my wooden wick lit.”

“Why won’t my wooden wick stay lit?”

These are common questions that I’ve been getting, so I created a video to help clear this up a bit. Wooden wicks are a little bit more complicated than cotton wicks, however, they both follow the same rules:

  • Make sure to trim your wick EVERY SINGLE TIME! With wooden wicks, this means that you want to break off the burnt wood every time before relighting it.

  • Don’t move your candle around after it’s lit.

  • Keep the lit candle away from fans or open windows. You don ‘t want to have a breeze around your candle.

  • Most importantly, keep your candle lit for a minimum of 2 hours, or at least until there’s a wax pool all the way across.

Hope this helps!!!

APRIL - JUNE NON-PROFIT

A Walk On Water ("AWOW") provides surf therapy to children with special needs or disability. The ocean’s transformative properties empower our participants, who enjoy a much-deserved day of laughter, love, and acceptance alongside their family. For one perfect, restorative day at the beach, there are no labels. Everyone is an Athlete.

AWOW works closely with our local communities, businesses, volunteers and watermen — brought together in service of a shared mission — to help those most in need experience the calming and therapeutic effects of the electrifying, living ocean; and, in the process, showcase the best of surf culture.

Since launching in 2012, AWOW has welcomed over 1,500 families and provided Surf Therapy to over 2,500 children and adults in need. Our mission is to help provide access to every child in need, especially those who have never had the chance to experience the healing power of surf therapy. With an industry-leading percentage of donated dollars going towards programs, A Walk On Water partners know their donation has an immediate impact, helping serve ever more Athletes in need.

Surf therapy is the act of guided surf instruction — provided by expertly trained Surf Therapists — in concert with a carefully constructed support structure of volunteers and supporters; it truly takes a village. AWOW Athletes gain confidence through the magical thrill of a walk on water, experiencing the true “stoke” of surfing and a sense of pride and accomplishment — all while being cheered on by family and friends. Siblings (and even parents!) surf alongside the Athlete, allowing the family to bond over a powerful shared experience. At the end of the day, each Athlete is presented with the trophy they earned in front of all their cheering fans.

AWOW Surf Therapy is more than just surfing: the entire family unit is treated to a well-deserved day of respite, complete with healthy food and drink, live music, art, yoga, and more. The letters we receive from families after a day of Surf Therapy tell us all we need to know:

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would see my child surf!”

“The volunteers who are truly angels on earth have become like family!”

“Our little family was loved and supported beyond what I could have ever anticipated.”

“We went from sensory overload on the road (to a surf therapy event) to our son taking his noise reducing headphones off on the way back home.”

“Noah returned to preschool the next week and was different. He was calm. He was participating. He was happy.”

“Surf therapy is wonderful, and it works!”

NOVEMBER Non-Profit

It’s been a while since I’ve done a blog post, so thought our new November non-profit would be a great topic to post about!

The following is from Sam DiMatteo, the founder of The SD Project -

“THE SD PROJECT

The SD Project is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization created to bring hope to struggling children in our sports communities throughout the U.S and abroad.

The SD Project began simply as a vision to seek out young members of my local community who's life struggles prevented their participation in sports. The goal being to allow these athletes to experience the opportunities, personal growth and life lessons that sports teaches our youth in so many ways.

We began reaching out to family, friends, former teammates and coaches over the years. Their donations of equipment and monetary support allowed us to have the means to supply needy children with sporting equipment. By word of mouth, we began finding families in our community in economic distress and children afflicted with mental or physical disabilities that were preventing them from playing team sports.

Our success over the years has allowed the SD Project to help hundreds of players in many communities across the world. We have evolved our community based charity into a global non-profit.  Our efforts are personal; we deliver equipment as well as hope to the front door of whoever is in need and wherever it is needed. We take pride in the fact that this small, local organization has been able to springboard over the years into a far-reaching charity. Now that the organization is a 501(c)(3), we are poised to expand into a larger community and corporate sponsorships. That will allow us to support many more deserving players, fulfilling our mission to bring hope to those who may have lost their own.

I have been blessed to have experienced sports in a community and family that supported my dreams and allowed me to develop my passion and talent into a career. So many similar teammates and coaching partners that I have met along the way agree and support this mission. It is my time to give back in a way that will allow others not experiencing the support I had to also reach their dream, potential and find the joy only sports can provide, I sincerely hope that you feel the same and join this opportunity to help change lives across the globe! WOODEN WICK WEDNESDAY

I've played around with different options for wicks, and recently was approached by Wooden Wick to try out some of theirs. To be honest, I hesitated at first, because it took such a long time to perfect the cotton wicks, but decided to give it a try.

I did the first round of testers and quickly eliminated a few because the wax wasn't melting in a timely fashion, or the wick wouldn't stay lit at all. After narrowing it down to a couple wicks, I was shocked at how long the projected burn time was - 100+ hours!

I wanted to test this myself, so decided to track the time, burn-by-burn. The candle actually reached over 100 hours! Not only does it look cool, and sound cool (it actually crackles!), but it will also increase the burn time of your candle by 15-20 hours!

I'm offering the wooden wick to all my VIP members, so check out the VIP Membership tab for more info & all the perks!

ALSO, MENTION THIS POST (email me or send me an Instagram DM) AND I'LL GIVE YOU A SPECIAL CODE TO ORDER A WOODEN WICK WITH ANY CANDLE!

FUN FACT FRIDAY - EXTEND YOUR BURN TIME

Happy Friday!!!

So you bought your candle, you're so excited to light it, and you want it to last FOREVER!!! Here are a few easy steps to follow that will ensure you have a LONG relationship with your candle...

- Before you light your candle (every single time, even the first time), make sure that your wick is cut to about 1/4 of an inch. You can get a long wick trimmer from Amazon for under $10.

- When you light your candle, try to keep it lit so that it burns all the way across. This is especially important with the first burn. An easy way to figure out how long that should be, measure the width of the jar, and convert the inches into hours... if your jar is 2 inches across, you can assume that it will take about 2 hours to get a full burn.

- Try to keep your candle away from open windows when it's windy out, fans, or any strong breeze.

- When you're done enjoying your candle, don't blow it out... Instead, cover the candle with the lid that it came with, it will deplete the oxygen and go out on its own.

When I do my burn tests, I light the candles for 2-4 hours at a time, always trim the wick, and the mason jars will last about 90 hours!

Have a great weekend!!!

FUN FACT FRIDAY - CANDLES ON PLANES

Happy Friday!!! I wanted to start doing a short post on Fridays with a fun fact... either about candles, wax, myself, regulations, etc.

I figured today I could start out with something I just found out a few months ago, and has made life a lot easier for many people - ARE YOU ALLOWED TO BRING CANDLES IN YOUR CARRY ON LUGGAGE?

The answer is ABSOLUTELY! Solid candles are 100% allowed in your carry on luggage as well as your checked luggage. When you go through security, they will have to swab them to check that there's nothing fishy about them, but after checking them out, they'll let you right past. I've copied the TSA website below if you'd like to check it out yourself!

SAFE TRAVELS!

About ME

Last, but not least, for the 3rd post of the day... let me tell you a bit about myself :)

I was born in Israel, and moved to California when I was three years old. My family and I lived in Orange County, where I went to school, and opted to go to college as well - Cal State Long Beach, where I graduated in 2009. I've had so many different jobs up until now, usually 2 or 3 at a time, but feel that all those experiences and friendships I've made have helped me build GOLDWICK - In-N-Out burger flipper, server, bartender, general manager, intern at a PR firm (during college), helicopter flight school, started my real estate brokerage and a project coordinator at a commercial engineering & architectural development firm.

In October 2016, I swiped right while browsing through Bumble, and went on my first date with my amazing husband. On our second date, I found out he was in the Marine Corps... Never in a million years did I think that I'd be a military wife, but I wouldn't change it for the world. In January 2018, we go relocated to North Carolina, and have been very fortunate to have a business that I can take with me, as well as the most supportive husband a girl could ask for.

It hasn't been easy, but I've been building relationships on the east coast and have some very exciting events & markets coming up!! All of which can be found on the "FIND ME" page! GOLDWICK is currently in two retail locations, Edge of Urge & A La Mode Boutique in Wilmington, and hope to grow as much as I can before our next move!

About GOLDWICK

My first official blog post, so decided to give you a bit of an introduction about how this all started -

For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to work for myself. After opening up my own Real Estate Brokerage, there were a couple different opportunities, but nothing really stuck. One random day in early 2017, my then boyfriend, now husband and I were throwing around some ideas for me to try out, and briefly brought up candle making. We placed a small order on Amazon for the necessary supplies - soy wax, appliances, wicks, etc. - and started our first couple batches.

Keep in mind that at this point, I had maybe bought 10 candles my whole life, all within the last couple years, all soy, and all locally made by very talented candle makers in Southern California, so when we decided to possibly move forward with this, I knew I had to add something in order to stand out - GOLD!

That started our 6-month science project where we worked on perfecting our beautiful candles, picking out a wide variety of fragrances for everyone, and building our social network before officially launching in August! Since then, I've been fortunate enough to have the enormous support of everyone - from my family, friends, fitness community, real estate community, and everyone in between.

Welcome!

Hi everyone!!!

First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for anyone who reads this, has checked out GOLDWICK's website, orders a candle, given feedback, posts on Instagram, Facebook, etc. It is because of you that I have been able to continue making these beautiful products!

I've decided to move forward with the advice of a friend of mine, and start a blog! I'll be posting exciting information, answering questions, telling you more about myself and my family, and basically take you on this wild ride with me.
